Safer Working Practice Awareness and Professional Abuse
Course Description
This session provides workers with an understanding of professional abuse, the scale of the issue, why allegations arise, the importance of safe practice, staff responsibilities, how to respond procedurally if allegations against a member of staff are made and the consequences if allegations are substantiated. It links closely to the DSCF Guidance on Safer working Practice and considers practical guidance around E-safety within settings. The extended session also covers basic good practice around safe recruitment It links to national guidance and Local Safeguarding Children Board (LSCB) procedures, including the role of the LADO.
This session is delivered over 1 x 3hr half day/evening session or 2 evening sessions/1 x 6hr full day
Aims and Objectives
To consider the issue of professional abuse
To develop an understanding of pre disposing factors to vulnerability and abuse and consider the factors which create vulnerabilities for children and for organisations
The scale of the issue linked to the lastest research and key findings
To consider why allegations arise
To develop an understanding of the duty of care employers have to staff e.g. safe recruitment, safe working environments, implications of not protecting staff
To consider practical guidance for settings on E-safety
To discuss levels of concern and appropriate responses e.g is the behaviour a poor practice /training issue - bad language around a child or is the behaviour so inappropriate it is placing a child at risk
To develop knowledge and understanding of basic safe practice
How can we work with and care for children safely - what are staff responibilities and safe conduct to protect themselves underpinned by the duty to keep children safe and protected from harm
To understand employers' responsiblitites and their organsiational responisibilites and to outline clear procedures to follow both nationally and locally, linked to the relevant legislation, including the role of the LADO.
To consider the reasons for and barriers to "whistleblowing"and support for staff who report concerns and staff who allegations have been made against
To consider the role of Ofsted and Social Care Teams in investigating any allegations made
