Safeguarding Children - The Next Step

Course Description

This session is designed to follow on from Safeguarding Children and gives practitioners an essential understanding of the child protection system and their role in working with other professionals. It aims to provide them with a confidence and ability to represent children and contribute to multi-agency meetings efffectively. It builds on knowledge from the basic session and considers local guidance in detail. It covers the potential outcomes of a referral to Local Authority Children's Social Care Teams. The session links in to the Common Assessment and aims to provide practitoners with a wider understanding of safeguarding and the child protection process. It prepares workers for working with children and their families where they have been assessed as in need and/or at risk of signifcant harm. It covers guidaance on preparing written reports for multi-agency meetings as well as what to expect when attending. The session links throughout to national guidance and Local Safeguarding Children Board (LSCB) procedures.

The course can be delivered over 2 x 3hr,  3 x 2hr or 1 x 6hr full day session. 

Aims and Objectives

To build on existing knowledge and to develop a wider understanding of the child protection process and the importance of a practitioner's role in effective multi-agency/integrated working:

To consider key principles of The Children Act 1989 e.g. Paramountcy and Parental Responsibility and what these mean in practice

To consider local thresholds of need guidance and develop an understanding of "Significant Harm"

To consider the range of potential outcomes after a referral is made, links to Common Assessment Framework,  timescales and the role of Local Authority Social Care teams

To develop knowledge and understanding of Initial and Core Assessments based on The Framework for the Assessment of Children in Need and a practitioner's role in contributing effectively to this process

To understand what happens when a child protection enquiry is initiated under Section 47 of The Children Act 1989 with particular reference to Strategy Discussions, attending Child Protection Conference and Core Groups and working with Child Protection Plans

To consider when care proceedings are initiated and emergency action is needed to protect children
