Safeguarding Children
Course Description
This session provides practitioners with essential knowledge and understanding of their role in safeguarding children and their child protection responsibilities. It considers safeguarding responsibilities and covers the pressures that families may face. Detailed information on key signs of concern and abuse, linked to the latest research is provided, alongside key links to both national legislation, government guidance and Local Safeguarding Children Board (LSCB) procedures and local thresholds guidance. It emphasises the importance of Integrated Working and considers a brief overview of the Common Assessment Framework. The session also provides a guide to safe practice evaluating and reflecting on current practice in settings and preparing for inspection. The session is in line with the guidance for safeguarding training as outlined in Working Together to Safeguard Children 2010.
This course can be delivered over 1 x 6hr full day session, 2 x 3hr half day/evening sessions or 3 x 2hr sessions.
Aims and Objectives
To consider the case of Victoria Climbie and Baby Peter - key lessons and implications for early years practice
To develop and understanding of "Safeguarding" and it's wider messages
To consider Integrated working and the importance of the Common Assessment Framework
To develop a practical understanding of Local Safeguarding Board Framework's of Need with reference to sections 17 and 47 of The Children Act 1989
To consider parents as partners and how this links to effective safeguarding
To consider the importance of safe practice
To provide relevant links to the Early Years Foundation Stage and meeting the welfare requirements
To define child abuse and identify key signs and symptoms of abuse, linking to the latest practice guidance
To consider the importance of accurate, effective record keeping methods and principles in safeguarding and child protection
To up date on the national guidance outlined in "What to do if you are worried a child is being abused" (2006) and gain an understanding of practitioners' responsibilities in relation to Local Safegaurding Children Board (LSCB) procedures, with particular reference to each local area's referral procedures
