Responding to Childhood Illnesses

Course Description

This session provides a detailed overview of childhood illnesses, infections and infestations in early years. It covers common childhood illnesses including key signs of fevers, tonsilitis, febrile convulsions, thrush and gastroentiritis.  Recognising key signs of infectious diseases such as measles, meningitus, whooping cough and others and responding quickly and effectively can be vital to a child's welfare and safety. The session also covers infestations such as scabies, threadworm and fleas as well as guidance on skin infections. Guidance on infection control in day care settings is provided and responding to a child' s needs - checking temperatures, dealing with pain and reporting illnesses is covered. The session also links to meeting the statutory requirements under the EYFS and offers the opportunity for evaluating practice and updating policies regarding recording, monitoring, storing and administration of medicines.

The session is delivered over 2 x 3hr sessions or 1 x 6hr/fullday session

Aims and Objectives

To provide an overview of the causes and prevention of ill heath in children

To consider key signs of common childhood illnesses including colds,ear infections,sore throat and tonsilitis, bronchitis, high temperatures, febrile convulsions, thrush, diarrhoea, vomiting and gastroentiritis

To consider key signs of infectious diseases and guidance on how to respond quickly and effectively to measles, meningitis, mumps, rubella, slapped cheek syndrome and others and procedures to follow to control the spreads of infection within settings, including exclusion periods

To discuss how to respond to infestations and skin conditions such as scabies and impetigo and how to respond to children's needs by checking temperatures, dealing with pain etc

To enable practioners to be confident in how to report illnesses and how to record and monitor a child's health appropriatley

To provide guidance on the administration and storing of medications within settings

To provide ands opportunity to update policy within the setting and to evaluate practice in line with EYFS requirements
