A Practical Introduction to The Common Core of Skills and Knowledge
Course Description
The Common Core of Skills and Knowledge is a key element of the Government's strategy to raise standards and quality in the delivery of services to childen and families. This session provides practitioners' with a basic understanding of how to integrate The Common Core of Skills and Knowledge into current practice. It will provide an overview of the six key areas identified which workers need to be able to demonstrate a basic level of competence. An overview and outline of each area will be provided - what it involves and how to implement practically in settings will be explored. It is a very practical session and there will be opportunities to identify gaps in current practice and self evaluation for settings. The session will aim to link to other training candidates have attended and cross reference where applicable.
The course can be delivered over 1 x 6hr full day session or 2 x 3hr half day/evening sessions. It can also be delivered over 3 x 2hr sessions.
Aims and Objectives
To provide an introduction to the Common Core - its background and rationale
To provide and overview of the six key areas identified which workers need to demonstrate competence in
- Effective communication and engagement with children, young people and families
- Child and young person development
- Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children
- Supporting transitions
- Multi-agency working
- Sharing information
The links to KEEP will be explored - Key Elements of Effective Practice
To complete worksheets with the key issues under each heading indicating where these are already met and highlighing gaps
From this, to enable workers' to be able to address the gaps and identify where they can cross reference e.g safeguarding, mulit agency working and information sharing link to CAF training.
Other gaps in competence will be identifed and and workers given strategies on how these can be addressed
